Day Ninety Two

I'm having a hard time staying away from the junk food this week. I thought it was because of the crap I ate over the weekend, but then I looked at the calendar and it all made sense. I love hormones. No really, I do : )
  • 2 c water
  • 2 bananas
  • bunch o' spinach
  • ~2 c fresh blueberries (whatever was left in the fridge)
  • ~2 c frozen peaches (whatever was left in the freezer)

Our farmer's market starts one week from tomorow and I. CAN'T. WAIT!!! I'll be cleaning out my fridge/freezer over the next week to make room for all of the fresh goodies I'll be bringing home. I'm sure I'll go a little overboard that first week!

Day Seventy Seven

Aaannd, here's today's post. Do you know what I did? Its so embarrassing. I can't believe it myself. It will just go to show how truly sick I was this week. I let spinach wilt and go bad. *hanging head in shame* Approximately 3 lbs of spinach must be thrown away. I stocked up for my cleanse and then I got so sick. I knew it was going bad and I just didn't care. It wasn't important enough for me to drag my sorry @$$ out of bed and bad it up and put it in the freezer. *snif snif*
Today's smoothie has the spinach that I was able to salvage in it, but it amounted to about one big handful. Maybe 1/3 of what I normally use. Let the public flogging begin.
  • water
  • banana
  • watermelon (about 1 c)
  • fresh blueberries (about 2 c)
  • frozen peaches
  • about 1 handful of spinach

Day Seventy Three

I just couldn't stomach yesterday's smoothie today, so I poured it all out. It was bad. Really really bad. I ate like crap this weekend and have felt like crap this weekend ~ go figure. Once I finally got home this evening, I made (and drank) my smoothie quota and feel ssoooo much better!
  • 2 c frozen blueberries
  • 10 frozen strawberries
  • 5 slices frozen peaches
  • 2 big handfuls of spinach
  • water

Oh, it was ssooo much better! Don't forget, tomorrow is the start of our green smoothie cleanse!

Day Sixty four

My family seems to be on the mend, but this was my worst day yet. I hope tomorrow will start the upswing. I know that while I'm sick I should be drinking even more green smoothies than normal, but I have zero energy and zero motivation. I took a two and a half hour nap today, I haven't done the dishes in about three days and in order to even make a smoothie today I had to clear a spot on the counter. Things aren't lookin' good in the green house. But never fear, I did make a smoothie today:
  • 2 c water
  • 1 banana
  • coupl'a big handfuls of spinach
  • about a cup or so of fresh blueberries
  • approx two peaches worth of frozen peach slices
  • agave

This might be one of my new favorites. I'll add it to my list of faves on teh left hand side of the blog. Enjoy!

Day Fifty nine

Well, I finally got the spinach out of the garage. I'll be so glad when this weekend is over. I sort of lost my mojo for a bit. I'm feeling much better now. I've been home most of the day and could plan and design my own meals and I'm in a much better mood. Today's smoothie:
  • about 2 cups of fresh blueberries
  • 2-3 handsfuls of spinach
  • 1 banana
  • handful of frozen pineapple
  • water

Its very good. My kids won't even try it. I think they OD'd on carbs this weekend. We'll fix that this week.

Day Thirty Five

Not fun stories to tell today. I think yesterday's wild ride involving a dog, some worms, some regurgitition, a feces collection and copious amounts of gagging has left my brain fried. I won't share pictures. (yes, my husband actually took some). I'm still not recovered. I may never be. Ugh. Anyway, here we go.
  • 2 c water
  • 2 bananas
  • 4 large handfuls spinach
  • 2 pineapple spears
  • 2 big handfuls blueberries
  • ICE

Yum. Its actually got a very mild flavor. I couldn't even taste the pineapple. Go figure.

Day Thirty Two

Phew, talk about cutting it close! I made it just under the wire here tonight. Luckily, I live on the West Coast, so its not actually past midnight yet. For those on the East Coast, I apologize for getting this out so late. Monday's are crazy days in our household and while I rely heavily on my smoothies to get me through them, I rarely get the luxury of sitting down to the computer long enough to get my post finished. Ok, here we go:
  • aprox 2 c fresh blueberries
  • 2 bananas
  • 2 cups water
  • 1 cameo apple
  • whole bunch of spinach
  • squirt of agave

Let 'er rip. I love blueberries and bananas together. YUM.

Green smoothies, when made with nutritious wholesome fresh fruits and vegetables (whole foods, not juices) have an enourmous amount of fiber in them, but still I wanted to up the ante a little today. Blueberry buckle anyone?
  • Juice of one lemon (approx 1/4 cup)
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 lb of fresh blueberries
  • 1/4 c raw walnuts (I did not soak them, as I just decided to use them this morning)
  • 1/4 rolled oats
  • handful of collard greens
  • couple handfuls of spinach
  • ICE

Day Eight, Part Deux

Yesterday's smoothie did not yield enough for all of us to have our desired amount, so I whipped up another one in the afternoon. It was delish! Into the vita-mix:
  • 2 c organic OJ
  • 1 large apple
  • 1 whole kiwi (skin & all)
  • 1 banana
  • 6oz clamshell of raspberries
  • 6oz clamshell of blueberries
  • lots o' spinach
  • ice

gave it a whirl and let 'er rip! It was good. DH said it was a bit too citrusy for his taste, but I think that was the combination of kiwi and OJ.

Day Two

***Warning! Today's post is very picture heavy!***
Its day two of my smoothie challenge & things are going well. Today I thought I'd show you step by step how I make my smoothies. Don't worry, not all posts will be this picture heavy : )

I started with my Basic Smoothie Starter with apple. I just cut out the core and chop the apple into dice sized pieces. Before I got my Vita-mix, I usually used pears as they are softer and a little easier on the motor.

I added two bananas. Mmmmm.....bananas.

Then came the spinach. Lots and lots of spinach! This is the good stuff! About two whole salads worth of spinch. Right there. In my blender. People think I'm nuts. I'm ok with that.

Blueberries. I splurged this week and bought some fresh berries. I was getting sick of frozen. Fresh is always best, but this time of year I buy what I can find and rely heavily on frozen fruit. I just make sure there is no added sugar or other ingredients.

Stuff it all in the Vita-mix and let 'er rip!

Keepin' things moving!

Lookin' good. Actually, its looking a little like mud. But I know it will taste good. That's what's important. If you can't handle the look of it you can put it in an opaque cup. I prefer a pretty glass.

More blueberries. Actually, I just couldn't fit them all in before I blended it. What is not pictured is several berries making the plunge and bouncing all over my counters. That's when I decided to add them in two batches.

ICE!! If I'm not using any frozen ingredients I like to add ice. It makes the smoothie nice and cold and gives it a bit of a slushie feel.

(please ignore the blue fingernail. a pen exploded on me yesterday.)
The Meyer Lemon. Its a hybrid between a traditional lemon and a mandarin orange. They are sweeter and a little less tart. I probably should have used them yesterday and then maybe my husband's reaction would have been a little more subdued. But I didn't have enough. Anyway, I just juiced half of this guy into our smoothie. Just to brighten up the flavor a bit.
Put smoothie into a pretty glass and add cheesy garnish. (not pictured: digging out a few lemon seeds after removing said garnish)

I keep my smoothies in a glass pitcher in the refrigerator and they'll keep for about a day or two. If there's any left. We usually finish the whole batch. And sometimes make more. Its an addiction around here. I'm tellin' ya!

Um, honey do you think you could take your eyes off The Bee Movie for just a second or two and look at Mommy? How about looking a little more enthusiastic, too? Could you do that for Mommy? Please?

Hhhmmmmm. I guess he gave me one of my requests.

Thank you, sweetie!
